Abstract (Περίληψη)

The production of cement is one of the most essential industrial activities, and contributes significantly to the economy of each country in which it is based. Cement is an inorganic hydraulic binder and a key component of concrete and mortar. Cement is produced by firing a mixture of ground limestone (contains: CaO) and clay (contains: Al2O3, SiO2, Fe2O3) in kilns at 1450 ℃. Its disadvantage is that it creates a significant carbon and energy footprint during its production, as well as a gradual depletion of mineral raw materials. In the present work, as an alternative proposal to the above problem, sulphοbelite and  Portland (alite) cements are studied, with the simultaneous utilization of byproducts in the mixture of raw materials. The sulphobelite cements were designed to contain 30-50% wt. yeelimite and fired at 1330 ℃ and rapidly cooled. In addition, a separate examination of the characteristics of the yeelimite phase, containing sulfur in the form of SO4 sulfates, was performed, which was produced stoichiometrically from pure oxides of pro-analysis grade in laboratory scale. The mixture of raw materials for the yeelimite synthesis was heated at three different temperatures, 1300 ℃, 1330 ℃ and 1350 ℃, and with two different baking profiles of 3 and 5 hours with rapid cooling. Samples of Portland cement were also prepared at lower firing temperatures (1340 ℃) than the conventional ones (1450 ℃). All the new materials that emerged were examined in terms of their characteristics, but also in terms of their compliance with European cement standards. Finally, a comparative environmental examination of representatives of each cement category was carried out, according to NEN 7573 standard.
